When your loved one got into an accident, this could lead to fractured bones. Some fractures are only minor while others can land them in the emergency room for a quick surgery.
But first, the doctor write lets the patient undergo an X-ray to understand which part of the body is fractured. In the medical term if you wanted to say, the fracture is a broken bone. It is very common, and every person will probably have one or two fracture incidents over his lifetime.
But the problem comes when the age of the person reaches forty and above due to weak bones. At this time, the bones of a person are going to weaken slowly. And the water of the bones dries up. What is a Compression Fracture?

Compression fracture is one the kind of condition we have today which is very common among people at an older age. It is associated with the fractured spinal cord. Some Facts Regarding Fracture


The duration of fracture healing is based on the type of injury suffered by the bones. It can be easily diagnosed in an X-ray.
There are many types of treatments for broken bones but one of the most advanced treatments is the use of EXOGEN ultrasound machine. The machine stimulates the cells of the bone to grow fast, so that they can form granulation tissues to form soft callus. This soft callus forms hard callus.
Several other factors also affect the treatment of fractures are nutrition, physical health level of the person.
I will definitely say that EXOGEN is a magic machine for those who are suffering from severe problems of fractured bones.
Stress fracture is a type of injury which cannot be referred as a complete type so it is classified under the incomplete category. It is a result of overuse of bones. The repeated stress on the bones may cause it to get cracked or fractured. It takes place near the ankle, legs or wrist.  It occurs commonly in the weight bearing bones. Bones of lower leg and bones of the foot are the major victims of this stress injury.
The duration of healing process depends on the extent of injury. It also depends upon the angle of the fracture or dislocation of bone. The process of fracture healing occurs in four stages-Haematoma formation, cellular growth, callus formation and ossification. When there is a fracture in bone, blood capillaries discharge blood around the fractured bone.
Callus increases the bone thickness as it covers the fracture area of bone. Osteoblasts keep in check the essential mineral salts such as calcium and phosphate ions are deposited properly on callus. These mineral salts helps in strengthening of callus. Osteoclasts help in smoothness of bones. This is called as the remodeling phase of the healing process.

Phases Involved in the Fracture Healing Process

This is an interesting process. I will let you know what happens after the injury and what the phases of fracture healing are. You can hear a cracking sound if you have a broken bone. The fractured area gets swollen and you will feel pain. 
 Also there may be an irritation or inflammation around the fracture. As soon as the bone breaks, it starts bleeding. You must consult a doctor immediately so that you come to know about the severity of the broken bone. After knowing the type of fracture you have, you will get proper treatment. But do you know that before the treatment has started, the bone starts a healing process by itself? 
There are three major phases involved in the process, such as the following:

1.     Reactive phase: It is known as the inflammatory phase. The vessels stop bleeding and a clot is formed called hematoma. The outer cell of hematoma degenerates and dies. But some inner cells called fibroblasts remain alive and replicate. They form a loose layer of cells called granulation layer.

2.     Reparative phase:  After some days of fracture the inner lining of bone periosteum   also replicate to form chondroblasts. These chondroblasts fill the gap in the broken bones by making a net-like structure. The fibroblasts in the granulation tissue also develop into chondroblasts to form the hyaline cartilage. The process continues until the fractured gap is filled completely. This process is called as callus formation.

Important Things to Know about Fracture



One of the important things to learn about the fracture is that there is no difference between this condition and the break in the bone. They are synonymous terms used to refer to the same thing. Different breaks take different amounts of time to heal because of a number of factors.
There is no truth in the belief that it is often better to break a bone than just have a soft tissue injury. Any broken bone is not a good thing that could happen to you or to anyone. The story is just an old wives tale.
You should also know what the different types of fractures are. They include the following:
1-Horizontal => The bone is fractured in a horizontal plane.

2-Oblique => The bone is fractured in an oblique or diagonal plane.

3-Spiral => The bone is fractured all the way round in a spiral shape.

4-Comminuted=> The bone is broken into many different pieces or fragments.

5-Compound =>The break has caused the bone to come through the skin, leaving an open wound that is prone to infection.

6-Crush =>The bone is compressed or pressed down.

7-Wedge =>Part of the bone is crushed. This is common in compression injuries of the spine where part of the vertebra is crushed. The broken bone then looks like a wedge.

8-Open =>This is the where the skin has been broken so that the broken bone is exposed.

Fracture - A Common Problem


Fracture is a medical term given to a broken bone. It can be treated very well if you take care of it properly.  Most of us suffer from this problem at one point in our life. It has been calculated that a human being can have two fractures in his lifetime. Are you also facing the problem of a broken bone?
Generally, a fracture is closely associated with the car accidents. It can occur due to accidental falls or some trauma. A sudden slip can be dangerous, if not taken care of. Even some types of cancer may result in broken bones eventually. It may also be caused by thinning of the bones among adults.
 Various treatments for fractured bones are available in the market. The treatment is different for each type of fractures. Splinting is the most common method used in treating fractured bones.  Splinting is still one of the methods used until today.
Casting is another method used for treating injuries involving fractured bones. Splinting is removed after a few days. Doctor uses a casting method for the treatment of a broken bone.
In case of serious injuries like compression fractures, braces are used. The vertebroplasty treatment is adopted to recover from the same condition too, especially the ones in the spinal cord.
Surgery is beneficial in open fractures. They are prone to infection as the broken comes in contact of the air. So, surgery is essential in this case. Metallic plates are also used to provide hardware support to the multiple fractured bones.
In short one thing I can say that it is not good to avoid treatment for broken bones. You must take these cases seriously.

Some Initial Level of Fracture Treatment



Fracture is the separation of the bone into two or more than two parts. There are different types of fractured bones like open and closed types. Open fractured injuries are more challenging and they create a lot of problems for the physicians. In earlier time, we had limited technologies for fracture treatment. Most of these cases are treated by splinting and casting afterwards. 
This is the most reliable and one of the widely used treatments available in the past and in the present time as well. But it is not the only one treatment available for fractured bones. We have so many new technologies in medical sciences which are available for us. For complicated cases, splinting and casting method are not suitable. Firstly, they are surgically treated.
In open fractures, the bones may break into several parts, which need to be placed together, aligned and set during the treatment. These broken parts are pinned up by removable pins surgically so that the broken bone can heal properly. These pins can be removed later.
In a comminuted fracture, a permanent hardware is used for support. Metallic plates and rods are used as hardware support. During this type of surgery, the patient will feel stiffness and a lot of pain. This is quite painful so the physician only advises it when there is no other option available.
Healing process can be accelerated by dietary changes. Doctors advise to take food rich in calcium, protein and vitamin D for faster healing of the fractured bone. It would be better to consult a dietician for planning a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D needed for your body. In addition to that, some medicines are also recommended so that healing process becomes faster.

Various Types of Fractures


“FRACTURE” is a break in the structure of the bones, as described in the medical term. Before the diagnosis however, doctors can’t consider the injury as a fractured type. There are thirteen types of fractures, namely:
1- Complete Fracture
2- Avulsion Fracture
3- Pathologic Fracture
4- Compressed Fracture
5- Comminuted Fracture
6- Incomplete Fracture
7- Greenstick Fracture
8- Oblique Fracture
9- Depressed Fracture
10- Spiral Fracture
11- Compound Fracture
12- Simple Fracture
13- Transverse Fracture
As for the “GREENSTICK FRACTURE,” it usually occurs at a young age in children. In this injury, one end of the bone is broken or dysfunctional while the second end is slightly curved or bent.
Fractured bones are treated largely depending on the doctor's findings after the diagnosis or the X-ray report. The X-ray report plays a vital role in the case of treating fractured bones. It also completes the diagnosis of the injury.

Now we talk about the “HIP FRACTURE.” There are three types of fractured hip cases, such as:
(a) Intracapsular Fracture
(b) Intertrochanteric Fracture
(c) Extracapsular Fracture
Back pain happens only because of fractured hips. If a doctor finds the location of the broken hip then he/she will also consider maturity, trauma, and multiple myeloma. There is a disease named osteoporosis, which usually happens among young women. Young women mostly contract this disease due to lack of calcium deposits on the bone.
Once the cause is found the doctor would consider studying the fracture. The doctor will try to find out when the injury happened and under how much stress the bone begins to break or stop holding weight. They will also consider tissue localization to avert edema, echymosis, muscle spasms, hemorrhage, and others.







First Aid for a Broken Bone





Fracture is caused by the breaking down of bones. It is a break or a crack in a bone. For the open fracture patient I am giving you some first aid tips:

1- If you suspect a broken bone, especially in the head, neck, back, hip, or upper leg, see severe bleeding, or see a bone protruding through the skin, don’t touch it.
2- Know the signs and symptoms of a fractured bone.
3- Remove or cut away the patient's clothing around the area of the injury.
4- Avoid washing the wound or probing or palpating it.
5- If the patient is bleeding heavily, and especially if blood is spurting, stop the bleeding much as you would any other wound, generally by pressing firmly with a cloth or even your hand.
6- Call emergency services or transport the patient yourself to the nearest hospital.
7- Cover the entire wound with a large, sterile (or as clean as possible) bandage, compress, or pad if a piece of the bone is protruding through the skin.
8- Have the injury treated by a physician or a qualified medical professional as soon as possible.
9- Treat an open fracture during first aid with a little effort and a lot of care.
10- If there is no blood loss danger, avoid putting pressure on an open fracture.

These all the primary steps in treating an open fracture before medical help arrives. This way you can get the instructions you need and provide the proper first aid. You should still make sure that proper and immediate medical attention is provided to the injured person even after having followed the steps outlined above, as broken bones can be serious. Always try to give confidence to the patient to help him ignore the pain.

Fracture and the Patient’s Age




Bone fracture occurs when the bone tissue is subjected to tensile, compressive, or sheer force in excess of its strength. Both the strength of the bone tissue and the nature of the forces acting on the bone change from infancy to old age, both normally and as a result of a disease. Fractured bone sometimes develops slowly rather than suddenly. Fatigue, or stress, and the incidence and type of fractured bones change with age.

Most fractured bones occur without skin injury. The skin wound in open fractures is caused either by severe direct trauma or by a sharp bone fragment that pierces the skin from within.

The bone tissue in young adults has high resistance to mechanical deformation. A fractured cortical bone in adults require tremendous forces, such as those encountered in motor accidents, and are therefore often associated with severe skin injuries and other lesions of soft tissue. Bones in children are springy and resilient, and the membrane enclosing the bones—the periosteum—is thick. Angular deformation of long bones in children therefore often results in incomplete, or “greenstick,” fractures. In the elderly the bone tissue becomes more brittle, especially the chancellors bone in vertebrae and in shoulder, wrist, hip, and knee joints.

The forces acting on the skeleton of a child normally are defined by body size and weight. Fractured bones in children are therefore rarely severely displaced or associated with severe soft tissue injury. In adults age 20 to 50, fractured bones are often caused by direct high-energy forces that have an explosive effect on bone and soft tissues and may cause severely displaced open fractures. In the elderly, the injury is usually caused by mild forces acting on brittle bone. Such fractured bones are rarely associated with soft tissue injury and often involve cancellers rather than the cortical bone.

What Happens During a Fracture



Fracture is caused by the breaking down of bones. Bone is not a static structure. It is continually shaped, reformed and rebuilt by cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts.

1-    Osteoblasts are cells which originate from the bone marrow and contribute to the production of the new bones.
2-    Osteoclasts are highly specialized cells that must work in perfect synchronization with osteoblasts to maintain the skeletal system. Osteoclasts themselves are very large cells, formed from the conjoining of several cells created by the bone marrow that travel in the circulatory system.

These cells continuously deposit and remove calcium and phosphorous, stored in a protein network that makes up the structure of the bone. Old bone is broken down by the osteoclasts and new bone is formed by the osteoblasts.

In women after their menopause, blood levels of the female hormone estrogen start to decrease. This results in an increase in bone breakdown by the osteoclasts, which can lead to a loss of bone density. Bone loss is particularly rapid for the first ten years after the menopause and it may lead to the development of osteoporosis - a condition in which the bones become weak and brittle and break (fracture) more easily. The osteoblasts are critical to the structure and integrity of the bone. They don't just build new bone, they also maintain and strengthen existing bone, and ensuring that the bone matrix is not compromised and that it is as even as possible.

As long as you fill your body with the right nutrients, particularly minerals such as calcium, you can help prevent fracture.

Fracture in Terms of Biology



The biology and biomechanics of fracture and soft tissue healing are no different among athletes. Athletes do not heal any quicker because they seek the advice and treatment of a ‘sports doctor’. In general, fracture union in the upper limb occurs in about six weeks among the adults and about half of this duration in a child, while its consolidation takes twice as long.

What is different among the patients is the attitude to injury. The demands of competition, especially at the elite level, may result in the athlete returning to training and competition too early, increasing the risk of further injury after sustaining fractured bones. Financial concerns may bear on this decision to return too early. Still, it is the athlete who will make the ultimate decision. It is the role of the sports medical team to advise what the risks are and how they may be minimized.

The clinical signs of fracture are important - pain, swelling, deformity and loss of function. Diagnosis is confirmed by x-ray. Early movement is the key for a swift return to full function so the fracture must be of a stable pattern, or be rendered stable by splinting or surgical fixation. Outcomes deteriorate if active range of motion is delayed beyond three weeks.

A fractured bone is reduced under appropriate anesthetic by closed or open means and rendered stable. Confirm by x-ray and repeat one week post injury and later as necessary.

If the fractured bone cannot be made stable by splinting, surgical fixation is necessary.

In general, displaced fractures involving joint surfaces will require reduction and surgical fixation. Note the called ‘clip’ or avulsion’ types of fractured bones, the bony equivalent of a tendon or ligament rupture, will usually require surgical repair.

Our skeletal system is made up of bones. The skeletal system helps our body to stand upright and to stay mobile. * Irritation and inflammation over the fractured area.
* Excessive pain due to bleeding of bone.
These are some symptoms but an X-ray is essential and it would let you know the exact place and type of fractured bone that you have. After that, only proper treatment can be given to the patient.

What You Need to Know About Toddler’s Fracture



What is a toddler’s fracture? Do you know about this type of injury? As the name suggests it is related to toddlers. Toddlers are the children of the age group of 9 months to 3 years. This fracture is very common in this age group of children. It may occur due to an accident in children.
It is not necessary that parents may recognize this fracture. It cannot be determined easily because the children in this age group usually fall while running, playing or walking. Children are more active at this stage. They can meet with an accident at any time. Falling is also very common among toddlers. Sometimes it is difficult to analyze the actual trauma that caused the fracture in the bone of the toddlers who cannot even speak or point to the painful area.
The fracture can arise by the twisting of the arms or legs of the child. The child feels pain and may be unable to carry his weight over his legs. The child will not be able to stand upright. If you detect this, consult the doctor for immediate remedy.

Stress fracture is one the types which cannot be referred to as a complete fractured bone hence it is considered an incomplete injury. It is a result of the overuse or abuse of the bones. The repeated stress on the bones may cause this condition. It takes place near the ankle, legs or wrist.  It occurs commonly in the weight bearing bones. Bones of lower leg and bones of the foot are the major victims of this problem.
As the stress fracture occurs in the weight bearing bone the healing process also takes more time. The duration of the healing process depends upon the location of this medical condition. It also depends on the body’s healing power and the severity of the condition. The process of healing can depend upon the dietary intake of the individual as well.
Stress fracture has limited symptoms. It can be determined by pain and tenderness near the injury site. It may cause a little pain initially but in the long run, the results may be dangerous. Therefore, necessary steps should be taken to prevent the stress injury.
Diagnosis of the stress fractured bone cannot be determined well in an X-ray. So a MRI or CT scan is used to detect it. A three-phase bone scan is another option to find the evidences of the fractured bones.
The scanning result may show a small crack in the bone. It is also called as the hairline fracture. The usual bones which are affected with the stress fracture are tibia and metatarsals.

First Aid for Fractured Bones

1.    Do not move the patient if it is not necessary. Care must be taken in case of head, neck and back fractures.
2.    You can tie a piece of cloth in the form of a splint. It is done so that the broken bone does not move.
3.    You can apply ice patch to prevent swelling. Applying an ice pack can reduce pain.

Healing
Green tea has some anti-oxidants which prevent us from cancer. It also works as a healing agent.
 Researchers believe that drinking green tea increases the density of bone by increasing bone minerals. The bone mineral density of green tea drinkers is comparatively higher than the non –tea drinkers.
The length of the entire process of healing fractured bones can depend on the body part where the injury has taken place. It can be two weeks for the fractured upper body parts and three to four weeks for the fractured lower body parts.
The bones get regenerated before the entire span of the treatment.  The remodeling phase also completes before the removal of cast.

1- The patient with a broken hip will have pain over the outer upper thigh or in the groin.
2- Immobility immediately happens after a fall.
3- Stiffness, bruising and swelling can be observed in and around your hip area.
4- Bone is completely broken; the leg may appear to be shorter than the noninsured leg.
5- The patient will often hold the injured leg in a still position with the foot and knee turned outward (external rotation).
6- Turning outward of your leg on the side of your injured hip
